How to choose the right number of lumens for each piece?

With LED lighting, it is essential to know what light is needed in a room. In fact, it can be difficult to choose the brightness according to a room. To do this, you need to know the number of lumens required.

What is the lumen?

The lumen indicates the total amount of light emitted by a light source, regardless of its direction. This indicator is crucial for determining the effectiveness of a luminaire. More specifically, it indicates the efficiency of a light source when it converts power into light. This is called the lumen per watt (Lm / W).

With LED lights, this value is higher because they need less power to generate the same amount of light as non-LED lighting. With the same characteristics, a halogen bulb will give 18 Lm / W whereas an LED will give 113 Lm / W. The higher the ratio, the more effective the product. Finally, the lumen corresponds to the brightness!

How many lumens per room?

In order to get the perfect lighting, you have to separate the different spaces you want to light. Indeed, some places will need a lot of light (the kitchen for example) and others will need less (like the room). To achieve the required number of lumens, you will also need to separate the number of lumens on multiple light sources. For example, you will not be able to equip yourself with a single luminaire that gives you 2500 lumens. To reach this amount, you will have to rely on 3 or 4 sources of lights (even more if you prefer).
Here is an overview of the number of lumens required depending on the parts. This is, of course, an indication. It can change depending on the natural light, the desired brightness, the size of the room, the height of the ceiling or even the color of the walls.

The kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house, where many activities take place. Thus, it is essential to have the ideal amount of light. First, you need a fixture above the table. Then you have to make sure there is enough light above the worktop. In this room, you have to find between 2000 and 4000 lumens.

The stay

The amount of lumen required for the stay is not the same between the living room and the dining room.
For the living room, you do not need to have much brightness, what we recommend is to equip you with dimmable LED lights. You will be able to choose the ideal atmosphere for each moment. In this space, you will need 1500 to 3000 lumens.
For the dining room, you will need more intense lighting. It is also recommended to buy dimmable LED lights. For this space, between 3000 and 6000 lumens will be perfect.

The bathroom

The bathroom is the room where you need a lot of light. You will need 2000 to 4000 lumens.
You can distribute them on one or more sources of lights, according to your preferences.

Bedroom

To choose the number of lumens needed in the room, you must first see if it contains a desk or a large piece of furniture (a dresser for example). If you have children, it is likely that they spend a lot of time in their room studying. In this specific case, you will need a lot of brightness. We recommend a number of lumens between 2000 and 4000.
